Slow-lo Blues with Jamica & Julie

Does solo dancing feel like just running through a list of moves you know? Does figuring out what to do next stress you out? In this class, we’ll work on movement and improvisation techniques that will give a natural flow to your solo dancing and relieve the pressure of “what to do next.” By the end of class, we’ll be having fun, relaxed solo dances that flow oh-so-nicely, by ourselves and interacting with other solo folks.

Trios & Role Switching with Jamica, Julie, and Alyssa

Prerequisites: students should be able to lead and/or follow turns & linear momentum (ex: side passes/passbys, sendouts, swingouts, whips, etc) from any jazz continuum dance. Some comfort with dancing both roles is helpful but not required.

Come join us for some high-level messing around! Trio dancing is a dynamic, social form where three (or more) people are leading, following, and dancing together. In this class, we’ll draw inspiration from across the jazz dance continuum to explore the richness and creative potential of trio dancing—ideas for two followers with one leader, two leaders with one follower, role switches within a multi-partner dance, and more!

4:30pm–5:40pm Rose Room

Bal-Swing Inspired with Dan & Alyssa

Sexy & Non-Sexy Blues with Jamica & Julie

The blues encompasses a wide range of styles and topics with sex and sexuality being one of the most well known themes. While one of the hallmarks of blues dancing, close embrace, isn’t inherently sexy–it can be. Students will learn and practice a variety of ways to connect in close embrace and how to embody the differences between platonic and more intimate dances. This class will be good for all levels of experience in blues dancing, for those with questions about the history and differences with the current scene, and those who want to practice consent (verbal and nonverbal)!

Core Musicality with Dan & Alyssa

Some songs call for a swing out, others for walking in close embrace position. This class is about hearing the song and making an active choice about how you want to dance to it, and then navigating different ideas between leads and follows.

In this class, we’ll be working on some fun moves that dancers at the Savoy Ballroom did as part of a dance called “The Ballroom.” We’ll break down and learn some of these moves that were shown in the documentary The Spirit Moves, and use that as inspiration to riff off of them to create our own flash moves.

This class is really about two important things: dancing through your movements, and equally valuing artistic input from both leads and follows. We'll explore what it means to be a dancer beyond partner technique, and how to navigate improvising together within the lead-follow dynamic.

Studio Rosette

Navigating Disagreements on the Dance Floor with Jamica & Julie

On the social floor, sometimes we’re on a different page from our partner. Whether we’re feeling the beat/energy/vibe differently from our partner, or we’re bringing techniques from different dances (blues/bal/lindy/etc.), this can make a social dance challenging! In this class, we’ll work on ways we can navigate these disagreements on the social floor, so we can have fun & connected dances with more people.
